Surgical Intensive Care Unit
The Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the Tufts Medical Center
is a 10 bed, quaternary care Intensive Care Unit. It provides state-of-the-art post-surgical
care for patients being treated for conditions ranging from liver transplantation
to high-risk obstetrics. It receives approximately 600 admissions annually.
It is staffed by a senior and experienced nursing staff, and has in-unit
24 hours coverage by a physician team led by Dr. Stanley A. Nasraway. Areas
of special expertise include:
- Resuscitation from circulatory shock
- Diagnosis and management of severe sepsis
- Prolonged care of patients who have survived catastrophic illness
The Surgical Intensive Care Unit voluntarily participates in a national database, Project Impact,
which allows tracking of outcomes for its patients, and comparisons with intensive
care units across North America. The Surgical Intensive Care Unit is the only Intensive Care Unit in Boston that
participates in Project Impact. The Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Tufts Medical Center has been part of Project
Impact since shortly after its inception, in 1997. The Surgical Intensive Care Unit has always
outperformed comparative Intensive Care Units nationally by:
- Documented superior survival from critical illness
- Documented decreased time spent in the Intensive Care Unit
- Documented lower rates of complications
